Psoriasis is a skin diseases characterized by a dry, scaly skin with evidence of splits or pustule. It occurs due to the sudden growth of the skin cells, forming them in days rather than in weeks. Because the body does not shed off these extra cells, the tendency is for these cells to pile up in the outer layer of the skin and will form abrasions.
When a person has psoriasis, he or she will have red and scaly skin. This skin condition is usually located on the legs, scalp, nails or arms. But any part of the body can also be infected commonly on the knees and elbows.
Although psoriasis is a chronic skin disease, still it is not an infection nor contagious. Even if a person with psoriasis touch or come in contact with an unaffected person, the latter will not acquire the said skin disease. In case, there are splits in the skin, the red scaly part of the skin will become infected.
Even if psoriasis is not a contagious disease, it can be inherited. There are people with genes that could make them have psoriasis in the body. Still, it does not guarantee total acquisition of the disease in case the people carry the genes of possible psoriasis. Often, one out of three in a family will have psoriasis.
There are factors that cause a person to suffer from psoriasis. One factor is infection. Infection in the body including skin infection, HIV and strep throat can cause psoriasis in the body. Another is trauma in the skin such as lesions on a skin injury. Cold weather can also trigger the formation of psoriasis. Next are the environmental factors such as too much alcohol and smoke. Skin injuries can also be a factor such as skin inflammation and too much scratching. Lastly is psychological stress which can eventually produce a worst case of psoriasis.
Psoriasis often occurs in any person at any time. It can manifest in any early age and can continue to trigger even during the golden years. Some people start experiencing psoriasis at the early age between 15 and 30 and will gradually get worst by the age of 50 and above.
Genes with psoriasis can also be a cause of having the said disease. However, it will not give an assurance that people in the family will also have the same disease. Often, these tendencies will occur if triggered by factors including stress and skin trauma.
